Artist Statement

“Each canvas is an exciting adventure for me. A treasure hunt for light, shadows, reflected lights, but at the same time to convey an emotion and enjoyment to the viewer of my work”

To let you know a little about my self, I am a fifth generation Texan now residing in San Marcos, Texas.  I have loved art all my life, but the light bulb didn’t come on until in my profession as a professional dressmaker for some years, a feeling of being permanently attached to the sewing machine prompted me to try my love of art. I started selling my work almost immediately. So laying aside my former profession I launched out on a very rewarding career as a professional artist.

I am completely self taught, by trial and error you might say and never ending observation and study.

I am a representational painter, working primarily in oils and watercolor.  My subjects are mainly the Texas Hill Country, but I paint many Westerns, Still Life, and European Scenes also Commissioned portraits.

Some of my accomplishments have been to be commissioned to paint two large paintings by former speaker of the House Billy Clayton, depicting Texas 1836 to 1986 these works were exhibited in the Texas State Capitol during the Texas Sesquicentennial.  Prints of these are now owned by many throughout Texas.

I have been published in the prestigious book “Contemporary Western Artist” written by Peggy and Harold Samuels.

Twice nominated as Texas Artist of the Year and each time one of the twelve finalists.

Commissioned by Franklyn Mint to paint a stage coach to be reproduced in a collectible plate project depicting the modes of travel in the Old West. I have participated in numerous exhibits and solo exhibits, demonstrations for various Art Leagues, Banks and Galleries. Also workshops.

Illustrating children’s books, the most resent ones “Mama Ducks Really Big Scare” and “Hopping With Joy”.

I teach classes in Oils on a limited basis in my studio by the pond. Recently I have started a line of B. J.’s Note Cards and Birthday Cards of my original art work.
